ReFraming Justice Organizer

AFSC-Arizona is excited to announce that we’re hiring!

The Organizer will work closely with our ReFraming Justice Program Coordinator to expand the membership, reach, visibility, and effectiveness of the program. Primary activities are outreach and recruitment, communication with members, organizing and facilitating meetings, conducting trainings, and organizing activities.

Status: Part-Time, 21 hours/week, 1-Year Specific Term

Location: Tucson or Phoenix, AZ

Program Summary

AFSC-Arizona is a program of American Friends Service Committee that focuses exclusively on criminal justice reform. We work to shift Arizona’s punitive and retributive approach to justice to one that addresses root causes, adopts best practices for building safe and healthy communities, and emphasizes inclusivity and healing.

A key component that runs throughout our work is fostering the leadership of systems-involved people. People directly impacted by the criminal punishment system—formerly incarcerated people, crime survivors, and their families—are uniquely positioned to lead the creation of approaches that heal trauma and repair harm.

The long-term goal of AFSC-Arizona’s program is to reduce the scope and impact of the criminal punishment system in Arizona and beyond, specifically through these broad objectives:

  • Reducing the number of people under the custody and control of the criminal punishment system
  • Halting expansion of the entire system—not just incarceration, but other forms of supervision, and surveillance
  • Shifting from punitive approaches to addressing root causes and investing community-based programs that create safety, health, and well-being for all

ReFraming Justice

ReFraming Justice is an outreach and leadership development initiative led by incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, convicted people and their loved ones. Through multi-media storytelling, research, coalition building, and community outreach, directly impacted people challenge and shift the narrative around justice and safety.

Through the ReFraming Justice Project, people who have been system involved are positioned to assume leadership positions and direct conversations around mass incarceration, re-entry, and policy/legislative change in Arizona.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Outreach to directly-impacted individuals in the Phoenix area
  2. Organize and facilitate trainings and workshops
  3. Network and build statewide coalition of directly-impacted people
  4. Connect ReFraming Justice participants with opportunities for media interviews, legislative testimony, storytelling, presentations, panels, participation in civic events, boards, panels and other leadership opportunities
  5. Mobilize members for advocacy efforts and events
  6. Coordinate with other AFSC-AZ work and projects as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 1-2 years organizing experience with non-profit, community, incarcerated people, or neighborhood groups in Arizona.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  1. Familiarity with the criminal justice system and involvement in the movement to end mass incarceration.
  2. People with convictions/formerly incarcerated people and families of incarcerated people are strongly encouraged to apply.
  3. Experience in developing strategic campaigns.
  4. Motivation, self-direction, and ability to work with limited/remote supervision.
  5. Experience leading and facilitating meetings and group processes.
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Google Docs.
  7. Ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes intense environment.
  8. Expert in juggling priorities and deadlines.
  9. Emotional maturity and a sense of humor.
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build genuine relationships with community members.
  11. Strong written and oral communications skills, including public speaking.
  12. Person of strong character, integrity, and discretion.
  13. Access to reliable transportation.
  14. Flexibility and willingness to work outside normal business hours, including evenings and weekends.
  15. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  16. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
  17. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.

Compensation

Salary $31,317 – Non-Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
