Position: Community Co-Researcher
Project: Reimagining Community Safety Research Project
Timeframe: 3 months (with the option of extending for another 3 months)
Job Status: Independent Contractor
Compensation: Stipend, plus reimbursements
Project background
The Reimagining Community Safety Research Project will survey Tucson communities on what constitutes safety in their neighborhoods. We will work with leaders from Wards 1, 3, and 5 to collect data on what residents define as “safety” and what investments would materially improve residents’ safety and wellbeing.
That data will be analyzed and fashioned into a report to be shared with the City of Tucson leadership to inform organizing and policy recommendations at the City and County levels and spur investments in community-based programs outside the punishment system.
Community Co-Researcher Role
We believe the best work, including research, happens in partnership with people already interested, invested, and doing the work in their communities. As with previous research initiatives we have led, we are seeking to partner with community leaders on the present project.
We are funded by MicroSoft/Urban Institute Catalyst Grant and the City of Tucson and have built into our proposal co-researcher positions to help lead this project.
Co-Researchers will be asked to:
- Attend paid training for survey collection methods and skill building
- Provide feedback on the study/data collection design. What is the best approach to collecting surveys?
- Provide feedback on the survey instrument. Are these the questions we should ask? Any questions missing? Are they clear?
- Once the survey instrument is solidified, your role will be getting community members, people in your neighborhood and beyond, to fill out the survey.
- Attend community events, door knocking, social media outreach to collect survey responses
- Check-ins with Project Coordinator to communicate collection success, barriers and milestones
- Promote the research on social media using the branded materials provided by AFSC
Qualifications
- Be an active member of your local community with strong relationships.
- Bilingual is a plus.
- Be outgoing and comfortable talking to people in a variety of settings (door-to-door, at public events).
- Able to work evenings and weekends.
- Access and familiarity with smart phone and/or tablet for survey entry.
- 18 years or older.
Compensation
We will offer a stipend of $1,500 paid over 3 months. Co-researchers will also be compensated $100 for attending the training and be provided gas cards or reimbursed for travel expenses.
